The above lists the largest shopping centres in Australia by:

• annual turnover
• gross lettable area
• annual turnover as as a ratio of area occupied by specialty stores.

As can be seen the 3 measures do not correlate very well. The industry prefers the 2 measures of:

• moving annual turnover per area
• moving annual turnover per area of specialty shops

- as being better measures of performance as it strips total size from the statistic. The specialty store area excludes department stores and supermarkets and although the return is not as safe as, the rental return from the specialty stores are much higher per area occupied and the most valuable component of the supermarket.
