Rapeseed is grown as an edible oilseed. It is similar in appearance to cabbage being a member of the same plant family. As with linseed, rape is a cotyledonous plant and presents a problem when controlling weeds. Furthermore, because it is a succulent leafy plant, it attracts aphids.

Whether or not to grow rapeseed depends on the expected market factors which is largely determined by the world price for vegetable oil. Forward contracts need to be made with oilseed crushers.
