The demolition of a building involves can involve a number of agencies. Demolition requires approval under planning and environment acts for its town planning and heritage affects. It is usually defined as building work under the relevant acts. People who demolish buildings must have a builder's licence that authorises demolition and must obtain building approval from a building certifier or authority for each demolition project. These requirements do not apply to the demolition of buildings exempt from approval. WorkCover may administer the requirements under the relevant Occupational Health and Safety Acts and possibly, dangerous goods legislation.

There may further regulations designed to maximise the reuse and recycling of demolition waste and to facilitate safe and environmentally responsible disposal of asbestos and contaminated soil.
