YARD

An open unoccupied piece of ground, usually relatively small and adjoining a building.


YARD TIMBER

Graded timber of all sizes and patterns intended for building purposes.


YOKE

Horizontal top member of a window frame.


ZONE

A space, bounded by reference planes, within of in relation to which building components, assemblies of elements may be positioned. (See 'Assembly', 'COMPONENT', 'ELEMENT', 'PLANE, Reference'.)

Controlling: A zone between controlling planes, provided for a structural element such as a roof, floor, load-bearing wall or column and includes, where appropriate, allowance for finishes, services, joints and tolerances. (See 'PLANE, Controlling'.)

Neutral: A zone which interrupts the regular increments of a building reference system. (See 'SYSTEM, Reference'.)
