beaufort house

The sole example of a Beaufort prefabricated house in Canberra was built in 1947 amid much enthusiasm and fanfare. Even before production commenced there were orders for 10,500 of the houses – 5 000 for the Victorian Housing Commission and 5 500 for the Commonwealth War Service Homes Commission to be fabricated on the plant that during World War 11 had fabricated Beaufort bombers. There is extensive use of metal in the Beaufort house with steel joists, frames and roof trusses. Further, there is steel sheet roofing and external steel wall cladding. The floors are hardwood and internal walls are plasterboard.
