BASALT

Red, brown and blue park and driveway rock of volcanic origin used for landscaping and driveways. Soil derived from surface lava flows that have cooled rapidly compared to granite.

Red and black volcanic soils generally with high fertility. Red basalt country can be very rocky (favoured by vineyards because of good drainage) whereas black basalt has a high clay content resulting in movement and large cracks (claimed to be self mulching) during dry weather.
